Virginia State Police ticket 7,419 speeders, arrest more than 100 drunk drivers over Thanksgiving
RICHMOND, Va. — Rather than taking a break for Thanksgiving, Virginia State Police took part in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) over the five-day holiday weekend with the goal of keeping roadways safe.
According to Virginia State Police, more than 7,400 speeding tickets, over 2,100 tickets for reckless driving and 102 drunk drivers were arrested during the holiday weekend. However, 12 people were killed in accidents between Wednesday morning and midnight Sunday.
Fatal accidents were reported in Danville, Hampton, Lynchburg, Winchester, Accomack County, Greensville County, Hanover County, Henry County, Montgomery County, Stafford County, and Wise County.
State Police also stated that in addition to reckless driving and speeding, 569 people were given citations for failure to wear a seatbelt and almost 200 were cited for violation of child safety seat laws.
